Meet 48th Street

In the 1920s, Turtle Bay, as this part of the east side of town is known, became a fashionable area in which to reside. Homes were restored and people began to participate in cultivating community gardens between 48th and 49th Streets.

Beginning my walk, I paid close attention to this peaceful and beautiful expanse. The first place of note was a window display of fun artwork in an otherwise nondescript, yet attractive townhouse. Was it someone’s home, or perhaps a gallery? I opened the unlocked door and had the pleasure of meeting Stan Church from whom I quickly learned that Wallace Church, the very successful branding and packaging company that he began back in 1975, is located at this address.

Spending time listening to Stan and his friend Charlie Rothschild, also a resident in the building, speak of the history of their street was mesmerizing. They spoke fondly of the woman who had owned a row of houses where their brownstone now stands. She was in her nineties when they purchased this building from her many decades ago. They recalled stories that she told of how, as a little girl, she used to swim in the East river and play on the sand.

Charlie moved to 48th Street in 1963. He was managing up-and-coming folk singers. “I embraced the 60s and 70s,” he said, as he reflected on the energy and the talent from its embryonic stage, and on how it evolved into a business from people simply performing in Washington Square Park and other venues in the Village. When I pushed him further to discuss what life was like then, he simply replied, “in retrospect, it was a moment, but for me, I didn’t see it that way; I was too busy living it.”

It was through Stan and Charlie that I was introduced to Teddy Demos, the owner of Elite Food Bar across the street. This small Greek coffee shop, with a patio in the back, is where many in the neighborhood seem to gather for a cappuccino in the morning and where, at lunchtime, the United Nations crowd stops in for the homemade spinach pie and Greek salads. After spending several fascinating hours on this stretch of 48th, I finally pulled myself away to continue my walk. I only went a short distance, however, before I met another charming man. Kelly La Rukico told me how he came to New York to study chemistry in 1968, but, instead, decided to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps and opened his own shop, La Rukico Tailors – only he did it in Manhattan, while they remained tailors in India. Moving along 48th, I was greeted enthusiastically by the staff at the Church of Sweden, as I explained my mission of exploring the side streets. With a chapel upstairs, the ground level serves as a community center where Swedes from New York and travelers from Scandinavia gather on a daily basis to eat their homemade buns, read a book from their library, or simply get absorbed in a Swedish conversation.

When crossing Fifth Avenue and continuing west, I gave a nod to Fox News Channel Studios, which aired a featured segment on Manhattan Sideways in the summer of 2014. Check us out!

I gave an appreciative nod to the Broadway theaters and their long history as I passed the Walter Kerr and the Longacre. I noticed that the theater district was showing signs of thinning out now that I was in the high 40s. I did step inside Hurley’s Saloon, a few doors down, where I was, once again, amazed at the long history behind this restaurant and bar.

Restaurants abound, as do hotels and rooftop bars on the west side, but a treasure trove of soothing products is hidden between them. The incense from Scent Elate’s emanate from the pocket-size boutique. Upon entering, I relished the quiet retreat for a short while. Back out on 48th, I was able to continue my tranquil state as I wandered into both the Marian S. Heiskell Garden and then into Clinton Garden – both splendid sanctuaries when one needs some time away from the streets of Manhattan.

As New Yorkers, we are all accustomed to small spaces, but the brand new (as of Summer 2014) Pocket Bar might take this concept to a whole new level. Yet, Suzy Darling’s petite bar is so filled with energy, kindness, and interesting wines and beers, that I am certain everyone sharing a drink in the 300 square feet of space feels part of something special.

Continuing to the very western part of the street, I was well-aware of what was about to greet me as the smell wafting from Chateau Stables was unmistakable. Never, however, did I anticipate, in addition to horses, to discover four precious ponies, a donkey, a very committed mother and daughter team, and a fifty-year-long history. The stable was a photo finish to 48th. Sadly, Chateau Stables, the oldest horse stable in NYC, closed after 50 years of business.
