Secret Gardens of the East Village
Walking the side streets, we have had the pleasure of discovering the unknown wonders that decorate our city – restaurants, businesses, stores, historic sites, and the unexpected colorful gardens that dot the streets of the East Village. Between 1st and 13th Street, green wonderlands crop up between the residential and commercial buildings. As we have traversed the Manhattan grid, we have come upon many gorgeous oases, and in these moments we have rested and relaxed, basking in the serenity that the gardens provide. Since the 1970’s, vacant lots throughout the city have been cultivated, bringing charm to side streets while also gathering people together. Several of the gardens are subdivided into small plots of land, allowing individuals to grow their own flowers, fruits, and vegetables. From large weeping willows, to rows of tulips and daffodils, to roses, peonies, delphiniums and hydrangea, to sculptures and tree houses, each garden is a reflection of the people who are dedicated to its preservation.
