West Side Story
The original concept when designing the Manhattan grid was to have the side streets be the major thoroughfares, as they were considered more important than the avenues in transporting people and goods from river to river. Today, the dream that many had in the early 1800s has, once again, become a reality as New Yorkers flock to the rivers, benefitting everyday from the magnificent paths that were constructed along both the East River and the Hudson.
Whether walking, biking or running on the west side, I am constantly mesmerized by the new and refurbished Hudson piers, the abstract and figurative sculptures, the myriad of plantings, and the history – all incorporated into the new infrastructure that makes up the greenway through Hudson River Park and Riverside Park.
