Meet 40th Street
My walk from east to west on 40th Street started inauspiciously amidst the serenity of the early morning hours, under a flock of seagulls looking out across the East River. Quickly, however, I entered the bustle of midtown Manhattan where there are numerous eateries, hotels, parking garages, hair salons, Permanent Missions to the United Nations, and banks.
Crossing Fifth Avenue, the New York Public Library’s dramatic southern facade seemed to follow me as I ambled towards Sixth, casting its ineluctable shadow of learning. And right behind it is Bryant Park, one of my treasured places to meander no matter the season. Within this block-wide space, lies Bryant Park Grill, a restaurant that brings tourists and New Yorkers together for a memorable meal in a very attractive setting. Across the street from the park, there are numerous places to discover and to indulge one’s sweet tooth. Japanese owned Royce’ and Lady M serve some of the city’s most delectable chocolates and exquisite cakes. Koi, the chic Japanese restaurant is inside the romantic Bryant Park Hotel.
Continuing across town, I found myself at the southern end of Times Square where the vibe changes into something completely different than any other area of the city. Personally, I find this part of Manhattan to be energetic and fascinating. Rather than trying to push past the crowds, I try to stop and simply watch and listen to the frenetic pace of people moving around me. I am inevitably captivated for those few moments.
Midtown Comics, a Mecca of heroes and villains and the Drama Book Shop (Lost Gem), where the theatrically minded can come to indulge their every whimsy, were the two gems at which the Sideways team were most enthusiastic to spend time.
Piccolo (Lost Gem) is a darling, petite cafe with excellent Italian specialties. And, as I have learned with the Manhattan Sideways team, a good beer at the end of any day is most appreciated. What better place to appease them than at the Beer Authority (Lost Gem).
Perhaps there are not as many hidden gems to be found on 40th, as on 39th, but I was still invigorated at certain points and peaceful at others… and there’s always good food to sample along the way.
