In the middle of June 2016, Analisse Taft-Gersten opened ALT Box, a clever concept that contains a cozy café in the front and an elegant showroom in the back. The showroom is a place where customers can purchase items for their homes, ranging from fashionable pillows and fine carpets to high-end furniture.
ALT Box is actually Analisse’s second venture into the retail world, as it is the Upper East Side satellite of the equally tasteful ALT For Living, which is located in the Flower District downtown. When asked about the difference between the two, Analisse explained that ALT Box is geared more towards everyday consumers, with a lot of grab-and-go items. Similar to her 28th Street location, ALT Box caters to people in the design trade. However, her newest store has a nice niche for layman clientele who are looking for a showroom experience.
Lucy, a member of the Manhattan Sideways team who could not refrain from stroking the soft carpets and silky draperies that are charmingly arranged in the showroom, turned to me and stated, “I am definitely coming back here when it is time to decorate my own apartment.” Lucy’s comment is an accurate reflection of Analisse’s goal for the products she carries. She wants her customer to appreciate the high quality in every item, including the carefully curated selection of candles, books, and other accessories throughout the quaint space.
The warm and delicious café, A Little Taste, enhances the shopping experience for anyone who steps inside the door. The menu includes an assortment of coffee and pastries. Lucy and I had the pleasure of trying the soft, sugar-coated Pistachio Agave Cookie, which is baked by Ovenly in Brooklyn. Analisse shared that the cookie compliments her favorite drink order, the Flat White, which has less foam and milk than a normal cappuccino. By offering high quality food and drink, a warm, intimate setting, and staff with expertise in home design, Analisse hopes that her original concept will resonate well with people on the Upper East Side.
