Meet 98th Street
98th is a surprising street and unique on my travels. Built in 1915, St. Bernard’s, an elite all-boys school was the one stand-out structure on the East Side. As I rapidly approached Mt. Sinai Hospital, which spans several blocks, I passed related medical buildings. It was on the West Side, however, that I was totally shocked. There are absolutely no businesses, religious institutions, or schools between Central Park West and the Hudson River – just a long string of residences. When I mentioned this to my friend – who resides in a particularly stunning pre-war building with a recessed golden archway – she laughed and said that it had never occurred to her.
