Women at Work
In March of 2012, we wrote our very first “Sideways Story,” a curated list of side street businesses based on a specific theme or idea. We chose to feature women in business, both because March is Women’s History Month and because, as the brainchild of a creative and entrepreneurial woman (read more about Betsy), Manhattan Sideways is always on the lookout for female-owned businesses and the talented, fascinating, and hardworking women behind them.
Six years later, we have revamped our Women’s History Month Sideways Story to include women from over one hundred side streets. According to census data from the late 2000s, 32% of business owners in New York City are women. As we move towards equality in wages, opportunity, and human rights, we would like to salute the women who have already managed to make a name for themselves in the commercial world of Manhattan.
Among these women and the enterprises they have built, we find such immense pride and skill. From food and fashion to art and wellness, the women of this city endlessly amaze, inspire, and captivate us on our side street adventures. They are an integral part of our journey and we thank them for all that they do.
