From the outside, Abracadabra appears to be a standard costume shop, but the moment we walked through the door, we knew we had stumbled upon something far different than anything we had experienced in the past. Immediately to the right, we encountered a “butcher” counter filled only with rubber body parts. This set the mood for what we would continue to find above us and all around. There were monsters and skeletons hanging from the ceiling, and fascinating costumes displayed on two floors. Not only is Abracadabra for the fun at heart, this is also a serious place for professionals to find tools for their craft as they sift through stage makeup, an extensive collection of costume moustaches, wigs, boas, hats, masks and an endless variety of props. What truly sets this store apart from any other, however, is that inside lies true magic. Tricky Henry, resident magician entertains anyone who stops by his counter. He is the real deal with an assortment of tricks to please every age group. Surrounded by boxes of magic tricks for purchase, Henry is delighted to open one up and teach amateurs how to use its contents. Friendly and magnetic, as well as technically skilled, Tricky Henry got his start years ago on the streets of Harlem. He made us question the laws of reality – like any good magician – but then he was kind enough to explain it.
