City Lore, an organization that began in 1986, is “dedicated to the preservation of New York City’s – and America’s – living cultural heritage.” Their office and gallery are on East 1st Street. In 2014, City Lore was able to move from its original upstairs space on 1st Street to the ground floor where they are now able to accommodate public programs such as art exhibitions and lecture series in the hopes of fostering their cultural conservation efforts.
Founder Steve Zeitlin said that although City Lore has long had a strong presence on the Lower East Side, they organize events throughout New York to help promote all that this amazing city has to offer.
In a city that sometimes can seem so vast, stories like this one make it feel like we are all in it together. One of my favorite parts about my Sideways walking experience is how often I find myself connecting the dots along the way. Remember Beasts of the Southern Wild, the low budget movie that won numerous awards? Well, just a little side note: Benh Zeitlin, the director of this movie is the son of Steve Zeitlin. I am thrilled for both father and son.
