Established: 1980s
This vacant land became a local garden in the early 1980s. In 1999, the city attempted to repurchase the land and replace this lovely garden with condos, but the neighborhood came together, and with help from Green Thumb (the largest community gardening program in the nation), Garden 48 is now maintained exclusively by neighbors. When we visited for the first time, the theme of the stunning murals on the wall was “women who made a difference in America.”
