Housed in the same building as Theatre 80 and William Barnacle Tavern, the first museum dedicated to organized crime and the gangster era in New York City is replete with its own prohibition history. On our visit, owner Lorcan Otway led us through the upstairs museum regaling us with stories of Dillinger and Schultz and pointing out the many artifacts that have been collected through the years. He then had us don hard hats (truly necessary) to explore the original speakeasy and tunnels in the basement of 80 St. Marks Place, where we learned of the discovery in the early 1960s of a hoard of cash buried in a long forgotten strongbox. Museum admission: General $15; Student $12; Senior $12; Tours $5.
