At Skincare Laser Studios, Marta Elena Rodriguez has combined her passion for creating, her foundation of over thirty years of experience in the beauty industry, and her dedication towards truly helping others, into her own unique approach to skincare.
Skincare Laser Studios is a simple, yet bright and airy space. Marta described her store in terms of her clients, a place where people are “relaxed, taken care of, not judged, and actually helped.” Being in the London Terrace, a building from the 1920’s that spans a whole square block, she especially feels a part of a homey community. Her conversations with her clients, many of whom she has known for years and considers her friends, are often her favorite part of the day.
When Marta was seventeen, she met Mrs. Lowenstein, an electrologist who had done more for her in one week than all of the others that she had met with had done in years. She told her, “if you teach me, I want to do this,” and was trained for six months on an almost daily basis to learn the ins and outs of beauty and business. Alongside her interest in the beauty industry, Marta has always felt pulled to the arts, and initially used her work in the beauty industry to pay for an education in painting, theatre, and film. Her acceptance into New York University’s film school brought her to New York City, where she eventually found her creative niche in the beauty industry.
Her main goal is always to enable her clients to maintain their own ideal image with as little effort as possible. The less often they see her, the better. “That’s freedom – freedom if you don’t have to shave your legs, or put foundation on, or cover anything! I want to bring everyone’s skin to normal… I want more people to come less often, to need me as little as possible in a way.” One of the most fun parts of her job is discovering what combinations of treatments and ingredients achieve the best result. She is always trying to continue creating, improving, and tailoring her existing regimes for her clients. She affirmed that “I sell skincare, not products… the product is really the service and I’m always improving.”
