When I walked into this cozy, lounge-like Starbucks and was greeted by art-adorned walls, I thought that I had mistaken an indie coffee shop for the growingly ubiquitous coffeehouse chain.
Surrounded on all sides by art-galleries, this new West Chelsea Starbucks sets itself apart through its decor, which reflects the spirit of the neighbourhood’s vibrant art scene. Hand-lettered menus, a vintage rug, locally sourced second-hand furniture, and a warm, coffee-inspired color palette create an edgy yet welcoming vibe. Most striking of all is the curated rotation of artwork on the walls, put up in collaboration with Uprise Art, an online gallery for local emerging artists. Proceeds from sales go to Free Arts NYC, an organization that provides underserved children with educational arts and mentoring programs.
Like everything else in this particular Starbucks, the coffee itself is special, too. The baristas take pride in using a manual espresso machine instead of an automated one and in serving high-end Reserve coffees from California.
