Honest Chops is an old-school butcher shop started by three friends – with no previous experience as butchers – who decided to do something about the lack of decent Halal meat options in New York City. When they opened in early 2014, Honest Chops made five "Honest-to-God" guarantees to its customers:
1. Meat is always hand-slaughtered, following the strictest Islamic guidelines.
2. All-natural meat means no growth hormones or antibiotics.
3. All meat comes from chickens and cows that are on strict vegetarian diets,
4. They promise to be transparent.
5. No question is off-limits.
The owners of the shop are dedicated to providing quality meat, fostering a community in the East Village, and to honoring their faith by ensuring that their products are Halal. They buy their products from local sources no more than 150 miles away, with beef coming from upstate New York and Maryland and chicken coming from Pennsylvania. Though the owners, Khalid (who happens to be the chaplain at NYU and at the NYPD), Anas, and Bassam, went into the business with nothing but passion for upholding their religious traditions, they’ve sure studied up and have made quite an impression on the East Village community with their wide selection of high-quality meats suitable for even the strictest Halal observer. As true entrepreneurs, they’ve filled a hole in the meat market that many didn’t even know was there.
