Each community garden has its own story, its own character and its own committed neighbors who tend to it. We were particularly taken by Green Oasis from the moment we met a lovely woman who is completely devoted to the plot of land here on East 8th. She discussed the history and the dedication that so many have had to ensure that this garden would continue to flourish. What we learned from our new friend was that in 1987, the movie Batteries Not Included was filmed across the street and the garden was used as a staging area. At the conclusion of the movie, the people in the community used the money that they had been given to purchase the gazebo that stands here today. There is a sign above the gazebo that claims it has a disputed history, but our guide assured us this is the true origin. Trees abound here, including a giant Blue Atlas Cedar (a rare find in New York City), cherry and mulberry trees and crepe myrtle. In addition, Green Oasis is known for its bee hives, a koi pond and the ongoing work that they do with the local schools.
