David Zwirner Gallery
Tu-Sa 10am-6pm
David Zwirner represents 43 highly esteemed contemporary artists and estates, both longtime established painters and sculptors, and up-and-coming artists. Mr. Zwirner is regularly ranked by ArtReview magazine as among the top 10 most powerful people in the art world – his recently renovated, 30,000 square foot 19th Street gallery comprises works by Donald Judd, Jeff Koons, Richard Serra, Marlene Dumas, and Lisa Yuskavage. The building itself, designed by renowned NYC architect Annabelle Selldorf, is stunning, and reason enough to visit the gallery. The clean lines and plan of the 5-story building– its entrance is actually at 537 West 20th Street – are rendered more intimate and tactile by the wood-inlaid concrete façade, warmly-hued teak window frames, and abundant natural light in the interior. It is also the first gallery in the U.S. to achieve LEED Gold certification. This is an unusual feat for gallery spaces, which require intensive light and specialized climate controls. David Zwirner opened his original gallery on Greene Street in Soho in 1993; he moved to 19th street in 2002. Zwirner also owns a gallery under his name in London, at 24 Grafton Street.
