Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace
Theodore Roosevelt is the only United States president to have been born and bred in Manhattan. Though the original townhouse he grew up in was razed in 1916, the Roosevelt Memorial Association, in 1919, drew up plans and almost exactly recreated the building that served as Teddy’s original home. The row house is a three-story brownstone with a large mansard roof, ornate carved decorations on the façade, and a classic, high New York City stoop. The house was further restored in 1923 by the addition of many of the 28th President’s original home furnishings by his widow, Edith. The museum is free to enter, and provides walking tours on the hour that cover both Teddy’s childhood and highly controversial, transformative presidency. The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace is a National Historic site.
