Art Students League of New York was founded in 1875 by a group of artists, many of whom were female. A New York City landmark, the League remains run by artists – for artists – with more than 5,000 people attending classes each year. The building is filled with clay, paint, easels, and a constant hum of activity. What a privilege it was to be given a behind-the-scenes look thanks to Ken Park, the League’s Director of Communications. As he guided us from floor to floor allowing us to witness a diverse group of sculpture students hard at work, and to engage in a quick conversation with a class of female welders, I could not help but imagine the likes of Jackson Pollock, Norman Rockwell, Georgia O’Keeffe and Louise Nevelson as they either were taking classes here, themselves, or instructing others in their medium. The Art Students League is strongly committed to affordable arts education and welcomes aspiring artists of all abilities and backgrounds. The one hundred plus courses offered include drawing, painting and printmaking.
