The Bloomingdale brothers, who opened their East Side Bazaar in 1872, were one of the first fashion retailers to sell more than one item, marking the beginning of the age of the “Department Store.” They moved uptown to their current location in 1886 and began expanding into the twentieth century. Now they are considered a New York Institution and their little, medium, and big brown bags are instantly recognizable.
