Wandering into Teuscher Chocolates is like walking into a menagerie. Hundreds of small brightly colored animals greeted me from the shelves, each one designed as a box to hold chocolate treats. The containers change with the seasons: When we visited, little sheep holders decorated the counter for the Chinese New Year, and there were bunnies getting ready to go out in anticipation of Easter. It is not the containers, alone, that are in fun shapes, however, as I found a variety of fanciful chocolates in the form of dogs, squirrels, airplanes, owls, cars, and more. And for the more sophisticated customer looking for something special, the tiny shop is known, at least in New York, for their Champagne truffles, made from dried out Dom Perignon.
Teuscher Chocolates is named for Dolf Teuscher, on whose recipes the chocolate is still based. The company began over seventy years ago in the Swiss Alps, and currently has locations throughout Europe, Canada, America and Asia. While speaking with owner, Liz, she was eager to let me know that she has been running her own Teuscher boutique, just off Madison Avenue, since 1977.
