The American Musical and Dramatic Academy was founded in 1964 by Philip H. Burton, adoptive father of actor Richard Burton. Its goal, to which it has adhered for over fifty years, is to use the experience and instruction of successful entertainers to help young, talented performers develop the tools they need to become working professionals.
Originally located on East 23rd Street, the college moved to Bleecker Street in the 1970s and then to the historic Ansonia building on the Upper West Side. The school experienced great success in the ’90s, which led to an expansion to 61st and to Los Angeles.
