Established: 1969
One of the best known supporters of the arts and humanities, the Andrew Mellon Foundation has been making helpful grants to educational programs since its founding in 1969. The not-for-profit corporation was formed by merging the Avalon Foundation and the Old Dominion Foundation, established by Andrew W. Mellon’s daughter and son, respectively. They named the consolidated result after their father, the famous philanthropist and industrialist who highly valued education and formed Carnegie Mellon University.
