Beloosesky Gallery
M-Sa 10am-6pm
Eyal Beloosesky has been very clever when it comes to where he places his gallery. He used to be on 87th Street, next door to Doyle New York. In 2014, he moved to 72nd Street, within spitting distance of Sotheby’s. The gallery has continuously been able to feed off of the foot traffic that comes from both of these well known auction houses. Glenn Spellman, Eyal’s partner who has been working in the art world since 1989, concurs. He feels that these post-auction crowds are a big reason why the gallery has received so many visitors, even on a side street.
Eyal and Glenn make a good pair. Whereas Eyal, an Israeli, specializes in art from his home country, Glenn’s core knowledge surrounds American art. Despite their backgrounds, they do not restrict their collection to only two countries – “We’ll handle everything,” Glenn explained. The one restriction that Glenn mentioned is that the gallery does not deal with emerging artists. Otherwise, Beloosesky is filled with exciting, eclectic exhibits. In addition, the men do restoration, and go on house calls in order to evaluate estates. This last activity appeared to be a favorite of Glenn’s. “It’s like treasure hunting,” he told me, his eyes lighting up.
