Though often called the “Dakota Hotel,” the Dakota is actually a collection of permanent residences. It is probably best known as the place where John Lennon was murdered in 1980, but it has a happier history as the home to a collection of other famous names, such as Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, and Judy Garland. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976.
