Born in Germany in 1824 and arriving in the United States in 1852, Franz Siegel fought in the Civil War and inspired fellow German-Americans to join him in the Union Army. Karl Bitter, an Austrian sculptor, was commissioned to create a statue of Siegel in 1904. It is one of several that were made to honor American military men who were born abroad.
