When Manhattan Sideways Team Member Jon first walked into Peter’s Flower in the summer of 2017, he was overwhelmed by the delicious smell of the fresh imports from that day. All of the shop’s flowers are imported daily direct from Holland, Colombia, and Ecuador, contributing to the strong and potent scent of the shop.
Jon spoke with the third generation owner of Peter’s Flower Shop. The owner's grandfather, Peter, started the store in 1937 just a few blocks away on Broadway and eventually handed it off to his son. In 1998, the son handed it off to the current owner, continuing the family tradition and legacy. The owner has fond memories of sweeping the floors when he was just five years old, back when his grandfather still worked at the store. He grew up constantly surrounded by flowers.
How does a flower shop stay open for eighty years? “Get here before the people get here. Stay ahead of them,” the owner explained, adding that it is also important to change with the times. Today the store has a sizable online business. He said that his father and grandfather taught him to always predict what his customers will want, so that he can keep them happy. “It’s all about the service. They like us, so they keep coming back.”
