In a city where most people live in small apartments that cannot fit a desk, co-working spaces have filled an important niche. Among the new companies that have opened to provide customers with a pleasant place to work, Bar Works stands out for being both affordable and for combining an office and a bar to create a terrific atmosphere to spend time.
Zoe Miller and Jonathan Black had the idea to create an economical co-working space for Manhattanites. They began on 39th Street and have since opened another location on West 46th Street in the spring of 2016, with continued plans for the West Village as well as San Francisco and then on to London. Joining Bar Works is extremely flexible: anyone can select between a co-working, permanent, or virtual membership, depending on how often they wish to come into the office. I spoke to Darryl, the manager, who told me that those who plan on only coming in once a month are usually given a virtual pass, which allows them access to a PO Box, special events, and one day of work. There is also an option that allows people to only come in two days a week. The full memberships come in two varieties: a permanent plan that allows one to reserve a seat, or the flex plan, which operates on a first-come-first-serve seat on any day. Darryl spoke of one gentleman who arrives every morning at 9am and always sits under the air conditioner, even though he has a Flex membership. "The situation is perfect for the man – he just wanted an office away from his office.”
Beyond the choice in membership, Bar Works tries to accommodate its clients’ schedules. “We only bill you for when you’re here,” Darryl offered. If members decide to go on vacation, they will not be charged for their time away. Additionally, the two-day-a-week membership allows days to rollover into future weeks. Another perk is that Bar Works is open twenty-four hours a day, thanks to a special electronic key. Printing, copying, internet, etc. is included at no extra fee, and members get free soft drinks and a twenty percent discount off wine and beer at the bar. I had assumed that the bar was only for members, but Darryl clarified that this section operates as a normal neighborhood bar during its Happy Hour from 4:30-6pm. In closing, Darryl added, “I don’t know another co-working establishment that offers what we do.” With a smile, he quipped the company’s tagline: “We’re a workspace with a vibe.”
