It is difficult to find a place to start with 10 Thousand Steps – this bookstore, art school, language school, after school program, theater, and gallery provides practically endless surprises. The business began as a bookstore on 12th Street, but after Hurricane Sandy forced the owners to relocate, it adapted to fill its new space just one block down.
Owned by husband and wife, Mikky and Timea, the bookstore has evolved into an arts center that is meant to start a conversation with European and American art through any medium imaginable. In an effort to expose residents of the East Village to Hungarian art and culture, the center offers Hungarian language classes for Americans and vice versa, studio art classes, creative writing classes, fitness classes, summer camps, and more.
Along the walls are pieces of art by Hungarian artist Kati Vilim, who also has a similar gallery in Budapest. Past her gallery and out the back is a garden space for theater rehearsals, small performances and book group gatherings. Of course, 10 Thousand Steps remembers its bookstore roots, and still carries an array of children’s books, newspapers, tabloids, novels and, magazines.
With a degree in architecture and psychology, Timea is trying to foster a creative and inclusive society in the East Village by sparking a dialogue between European and American art in as many ways as possible. Ten Thousand Steps has ten thousand ideas for inspiring culture, and is only just getting started.
