We were hungry and trying to find a restaurant open at the odd hour of the afternoon that we needed to eat. Little did we realize what we had walked into. The decor is unobtrusive and warm: gray walls that are neither drab nor suffocating, a bar that serves up sake, Japanese beer, and plum wine, and a bustling sushi counter where dishes are always being prepared. The real decoration comes with the food, which is beautifully presented and artfully prepared. We dined on sweet corn tempura made with maitake mushroom and taro, nearly perfect edamame, a flavorful shitake salad, and a number of delicious rolls, including a satsuma-imo tempura roll (fried sweet potato), and a shrimp tempura, avocado, and cucumber roll.
