FAO Schwarz 1 Toys Midtown Midtown East

Introducing members of the Sideways team - who were from other parts of the world - to a store that I had literally grown up in was so much fun, as FAO never fails to bring out the child in any of us. I brought my own kids up thinking that this wonderland of toys was a museum. We could look and touch when allowed, but this was not a store, therefore we could not purchase and take anything home with us. Believe it or not, I got away with this for many years.

On the day that I had my international grownup kids with me, we began on the lower level where one described it as a Willy Wonka worthy selection of colorful sugary treats displayed in seemingly endless rows of candy. After salivating over the pastries and the homemade fudge at the cafe, I urged them to move on, as I was eager to immerse them in the world of toys, because for me, this is the essence of FAO.

Slowly ascending the elevator, I had them turn around to get a full view of the main floor where stuffed animals have been the focal point for as long as I can remember. Upstairs, they were entertained by the flying airplane demonstration cutting through the aisles, the large balloons bouncing around and the Muppet Whatnot Workshop that was added to the store in 2008, allowing guests to design their own custom made Muppet. I had the team wait on the line so that they, too, could dance on the grand piano floor mat reminiscent of Tom Hank's prized moment in the movie "Big," and then simply observed them as each was mesmerized by something different when they attempted to work their way through the crowds of people.

Founded in 1862, FAO is the oldest toy store in the country. Having moved around to several places in the city before settling into its current location in 1986, it has become an iconic New York institution. Although it is possible to buy the toys online, experiencing the flagship store is a must for everyone, even if it is just once.
