When they first opened in 2014, Communal had a long communal table for which it was named. Though the table has been removed (and placed in one of the Beyond Restaurant Group's other locations), the sense of community lives on. Not only is the restaurant partnered with Naam Yoga upstairs, but it creates a neighborhood environment for the denizens of the Upper West Side. There is now a comfy couch for people to settle into while working on their computers, or intimately placed tables for quiet conversation. The owner, Cristina Castaneda, has been running restaurants in the area for twenty years. She started with a string of Mexican eateries, branched out to Spanish tapas, and is presently trying her hand at a restaurant that focuses on healthy eating and sustainable, farm-fresh foods.
Cristina is best known for Cafe Frida, on Columbus Avenue. "We've seen the kids growing up," Joaquin Martinez, Cristina's managing partner told me. "We serve the neighborhood." I have been a fan of the freshly squeezed juice combinations and salads since day one, but since a recent change in the menu, I have found even more mouthwatering options. The veggie burger, made with quinoa, is a particular favorite of mine. The smoothie and juice list, which was developed by one of the members of Naam Yoga, focuses on curing whatever ailments a customer may have. The one that I most consistently order is "Abundance," made with beet, pineapple, green apple, and cilantro. The extraordinary colored drink is zingy and fresh, and perhaps even boosts my strength, at the same time. "That's what we're here for," Joaquin chimed in when I stated my enthusiasm. "We are a 'restaurant' – we're here to 'restore' people."
