When my granddaughter was turning four and my daughter was contemplating what she could bring to her school classroom, she said to me, "Everyone always brings the same kosher cupcakes from the one bakery nearby; I would love to come up with something that is acceptable, but different." I told her to leave it to me. The following weekend, I traveled from New York with my special box of cake pops from My Most Favorite Food to present to my granddaughter's class on her birthday. As the children marveled at these yummy colorful creations, my sweet little granddaughter turned to her friends and said, "Don't you love what my G (that is what she calls me) brought for us." My heart simply melted.
My Most Favorite Food has a tongue-in-cheek name designed to make people ask questions about the dinner destination. It is a kosher restaurant, bakery, and catering service that grew out of My Most Favorite Dessert Company in Great Neck, Long Island. The restaurant first opened on Madison Avenue before moving to Midtown and then the Upper West Side. The founder, Doris Schechter, built many of her recipes off of memories of her grandmother's cooking in Austria-Hungary, before her family was forced to flee during World War II. After growing up in Italy, where Doris had a love for the culture, people and food, she was sure to create a menu that reflects Italian cuisine. The result has been a successful European fusion. The pasta dishes are excellent, but the dishes that I return for are the eggplant rollatini and the shitake mushroom salad. Together they make the perfect meal for me; however, one must always save room for the endless list of incredible desserts.
