Beginning its life as the Selwyn Theatre in 1918, the American Airlines Theatre was named after its founders, brothers and producers Edgar and Archibald (whose “wyn” made up the second half of Goldwyn Pictures). The Italian Renaissance structure originally hosted plays and musicals, alternating between theatrical and cinematic productions for decades before ultimately falling into disrepair. In 1990, the city purchased the Selwyn, and it became one of the theaters renovated by the New 42nd Street organization so central to the revitalization of the district. The theater reopened in 2000, renamed and overseen by the Roundabout Theatre Company. Now restored to its former glory, this funky glass-fronted theater has been putting on Tony-nominated plays since its revival.
