"We plant, we learn and we see the sun," read the sign that caught my attention before I even looked inside the fence and noticed the garden. The Marian S. Heiskell Garden opened in 1997, named in honor of a woman who worked tirelessly to preserve New York City. Marian Heiskell sat on many boards and was the co-founder and head of the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy. The initial concept has continued through the years, encouraging students in the community to participate in the upkeep of the gardens and teachers to use it as an outdoor classroom.
