A back-to-basics coffee shop where the coffee and the people are what is important, Third Rail Coffee’s second location on 10th street was the dream all along. After admiring this space for the past two ownerships, Humberto finally got the chance to make this his own.
The wide storefront and view of St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery make this the perfect location for Third Rail Coffee and the outdoor, bench seating, playfully called the “piazza” by staff members, is a great place to enjoy one's brew on a nice day. Just as the name suggests, Third Rail believes that coffee “powers the system” and “makes the city work,” just as the third rail does. It “takes you places” and is also a silent shout out to the old school graffiti and urban artists.
A friendly and knowledgeable barista raved about how this shop “thrives off of kinetic energy.” Third Rail is all about “treating everybody like family.” We experienced this first hand on one of our visits when employees remembered us by name. Everyone who walks in has a connection with a barista and feels comfortable reading or thinking in the custom-designed bench seating. Humberto admits that being friendly and open is the most important for hiring new staff; he can train them to make a good cup of coffee, but cannot force personality. Coming from a past of bar tending, Humberto remembers his passion for exchanging experiences with others fondly.
Third Rail is a community spot where the exposed brick wall, iron column, and reclaimed walnut counters add to the natural and easy ambiance. During the summer there is no other drink to try than the Cold Brew – this drink is so naturally smooth and sweet, we did not need any sugar or milk. The refreshing beverage has a 24-hour process to become just right, but it is worth it to Third Rail to create an amazing and refreshing drink. For a hot coffee, try one of the brewed-to-order cups of single origin coffee. These coffees are from specific farms around the world and the selection changes based on what is fresh. In just three minutes we watched the barista use their Chemex brewing system to create a single cup of amazing coffee. Third Rail’s success is no fluke; their coffee obsession and love for service is obvious in the cup and conversation.
