Kyndra, the assistant manager at I Love Kickboxing, likes to call her studio the “Disneyland of kickboxing.” After spending just a few minutes at the welcome desk, it is clear why. The enthusiastic and energetic staff are what make this place so special. Unlike other exercise gyms, I Love Kickboxing places a strong emphasis on the interpersonal relationships that the staff make with their kickboxers. Every person who enters the studio is greeted by a friendly trainer who checks in on their personal lives. The staff truly believe in this results-based studio and do everything they can to ensure that people feel motivated, work hard, and have fun.
Mixing hard work with fun is certainly a priority for everyone who exercises at I Love Kickboxing. The studio created a Facebook page in an effort to keep in touch with their clients, allow them to receive updates, and simply form a close community outside the gym. When I visited, they were in the middle of their thirty day ab challenge, a motivating contest that offered prizes to some of the best participants. Kyndra shared with me that I Love Kickboxing is a larger franchise and that each year, they have a field day on Long Island during which the studios in New York compete against one another. The 27th Street studio is the proud 2015 champion, and when I spoke with staff members during the summer of 2016, I learned that they were looking forward to holding onto their title at the next competition.
A Manhattan Sideways intern, Emily, took a class, and was amazed at how she was able to complete an insanely tough workout without feeling too tired or drained. She found that the staff took extreme care with those who were new to kickboxing by providing individualized attention and support. Emily said that it felt as though almost every muscle in her body was firing as she was hitting the punching bag, but that the trainers were right next to her, supporting every punch.
Despite the fact that there is an emphasis on fun, the primary objective at I Love Kickboxing is for people to push themselves to complete some of the most strenuous workouts possible - and to be motivated to work out even harder than they did the previous week.
