The New York Institute of Aromatic Studies is now the School for Aromatic Studies and is headquartered at Chapel Hill NC 27516, with a retreat location at Yarrow Mountain Farm, Stuart, VA. The School is run exclusively by Jade Shutes.
When I walked into the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies, a wave of calm hit me. The place is, perhaps unsurprisingly, filled with subtle, herbal scents. Jars and vials of essential oils line the walls, while a long wooden table serves as the classroom. The Institute was founded in 2017 by merging Amy Galper's in-person aromatherapy school and Jade Shutes' extensive online following (she has over 60,000 thousand followers on Facebook and over 20,000 people have taken her online classes). A premier expert in her field, Jade was actually Amy’s teacher when she first grew interested in aromatherapy over twenty years ago. For her part, Jade has been working with essential oils for around thirty-five years.
The merger has served them well, drawing people from around the world to New York to take their classes in person. The Institute offers a wide range of courses, for everyone from wide-eyed (or, rather, -nosed) beginners to those seeking certification as aromatherapists. Both short-term workshops and longer term weekly classes are available to suit every scheduling need. For newbies curious about the study of aromatherapy, Amy has one piece of advice: Start sniffing. “Aromatherapy is one of the easiest things, as far as plant-based medicine, to get involved in because all you have to do is smell it. You don’t even know how to use it or anything, but you can have a profound effect on your health just by sniffing it.”
For Amy and Jade, their work is all about that instantaneous effect on one’s health - that sense of tranquility I felt immediately upon entering their space. “The minute you smell an essential oil, it affects your mind and your psychology. According to Amy, "The minute you apply it on your body, it affects your physiology. In one sniff, you can get an immediate mind/body connection. The use of essential oils can bring everyone to a deeper understanding of themselves and their own healing. We really believe that through our sense of smell, we can raise consciousness to live happier and healthier lives.”
