This iconic auction house dates back to 1766, when James Christie made its first documented sale. Although Christie's was founded in England, the enterprise now has offices and salesrooms across the world. The major leap across the pond happened in 1977, when Christie's appeared in New York and settled on Park Avenue. The salesroom remained there for twenty years until, with the increased interest and activity, there was no way to deny that the space was simply too small. Relocating to the realm of Rockefeller Center, Christie's moved to 49th Street in 1997. Many changes in leadership and ownership have taken place within the company, but Christie's reputation has never faltered. Along with selling and storing some of the most valuable and iconic pieces of art, jewelry and real estate, Christie's heads a graduate educational program, focused on art history and the art business.
