Conflicting creation myths provide different accounts of the origins of the Nederlander. It was constructed in 1921 as the National Theatre and then went on to have numerous owners and names until 1980 when the Nederlander family made it one of its own. (They presently have nine theaters on Broadway). With over a thousand seats, many notable shows have been performed in the space; recently, Rent had a wildly popular twelve-year run, and presently, it is where Newsies is performed each evening.
