The Mansfield
Established: 1904
Built in 1904 and designed by James Renwick (of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral fame), The Mansfield retains quite a bit of historic charm and beauty. The open lobby, marbled and replete with Ionic columns, adjoins a reading room and the M Bar. The Mansfield’s 126 rooms are elegant and ornate, in a classical style. Interesting footnote: the bootlegger, Max von Gerlach, spent some time here during Prohibition, providing liquor to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ever the colorful soul, von Gerlach then purportedly became the basis for Fitzgerald’s Old Sport in the Great Gatsby.
