Elizabeth McKay knew when she was doing her research for the perfect location to open her boutique that the Upper East Side was the only place to go. “The clothes fit the demographic,” she explained. For many, her colorful, feminine pieces seem perfect when packing for a vacation in a resort town or simply a weekend in the Hamptons. Despite having a clear target customer, each of Elizabeth's pieces is unique. “My clothing runs the gamut," Elizabeth said, adding that people are always commenting that they "haven’t seen this before.”
In speaking with Elizabeth about her background, she told me that she did not always know she wanted to design clothes. She was an undergraduate photography major before joining an advertising agency. She then decided to go to Parsons School of Design and interned at Tibi, a New York-based clothing company, before starting her own brand. Elizabeth’s history in and eye for photography is hinted at throughout her store. The intimate space is lined with white built-in shelves that create a border for her pieces, like the frame of a camera.
Elizabeth showed me some of the first items that she designed, in an area of the store that she calls, “a capsule of our classic collection.” She pulled out a silky red elephant shirt that has been selling well since the shop first opened in 2014. “It’s the little shirt that could,” Elizabeth said with a smile. “I love elephants.” She travels to China, India, and Africa during the year, and feels inspired by the wildlife in different continents. She has brought many new elements into her shop, including a tweed line and various accessories, including jewelry and stationery, but the playful animals that appear throughout her boutique, including zebras and horses, have remained constant.
I asked Elizabeth, who was eight months pregnant at the time, if she ever considered doing a children’s line. The whimsical patterns seemed perfectly adaptable to kids wear. Though baby clothes are not in the cards right now, Elizabeth is happy to be living in a neighborhood that is both family-friendly and fashion-forward. “I love the Upper East Side,” she said, beaming.
