Chef Sara Jenkins has combined her love for both meat and pasta at Porsena, a delightful trattoria on one side and "Extra Bar" on the other. As many will recall, she originally had two separate locations - Porchetta used to be a few blocks east on 7th.
Although I first began walking on the side streets in 2011, today in 2017, I still have fond memories of the first time I dined at Porsena. It was during Passover: We did not order pasta, but rather chose carefully, as we were observing the holiday. A few minutes after the waiter took our order, the chef appeared at our table, and shyly asked if we were Jewish and therefore trying to avoid certain items on the menu. When we replied, “yes,” he immediately offered to prepare something special for us. He suggested the Pennette Col Cavolfiore to me, minus the pasta and the bread crumbs. A fantastic plate of roasted cauliflower mixed with olives, capers and garlic arrived – it was outstanding. Everyone’s dinner was perfect, and we will always remember the chef’s thoughtfulness.
Around the corner from the well-regarded traditional restaurant, Il Buco, is Alimentari & Vineria, the market and wine bar that sells imported Italian foods. Up front, there is counter seating for a quick bite as well as more leisurely, contemporary dining down a few steps in the back. The food not only looks enticing, but it tastes amazing, and the people who work here are helpful and knowledgeable. Shortly after they had opened in the fall of 2011, we sampled some sandwiches on their house-baked breads - Tuscan Kale Panini with Stracchino cheese spread and a Soppressata panini with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese. Simple and delicious. Garnering instant popularity and acclaim from The New York Times to Zagat, we are confident in adding our enthusiastic support and highest recommendation to this authentic hotspot.
I would have to say that John's is about as old world Italian as one can get here in the East Village. The décor, the menu, and the service all take me back to my youth when I adored going out to eat with my family and ordering spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, or veal parmigiana. I do still appreciate all that they have to offer, but now I, personally, prefer their eggplant or pizza. John's opened its doors in 1908 and is considered one of the oldest speakeasies in the city. It was downstairs in the basement where they made their wine and whiskey. Over the years, John's has been a popular film location for filming many TV shows and movies including Boardwalk Empire.
Upon entering this simple but warm restaurant, you cannot miss the heavenly smell of baked bread. When we met the owner and chef, Esberanza, on a recent visit, she and her niece were eager to tell us their family story. Apparently, Esbranza and her sister, who is a co-owner, married two brothers, who they met decades ago at Roseland Ballroom. Originally, they had taken this space for Esberanza to work on her custom-made lingerie for Victoria Secret, Baby Phat and her own line called Epy, but she tired of this after many years in the business, and decided to pursue her other passion - food. Fortunate for us, she is now sharing her talents in this quaint restaurant.
Il Buco is like stepping into another universe tucked away from the already tranquil Bond Street. The copper pots and pans hanging from the ceiling, antique plates on the shelves, and wooden tables and chairs complement this rustic Italian restaurant. On the day that we were here, artist Chuck Close was as well... supposedly this is his "favorite haunt, " as he lives just a few doors away. Always a fan of his artwork, it was great fun to see him sitting at a table nearby. The hostess was kind enough to suggest that we take a peak downstairs at their impressive wine cellar. We descended the stone stairway where we encountered bottles upon bottles of wines lining the walls.
"The Two Faces of Italian Food" is the tagline at this restaurant and wine bar. The perfect blend they are referring to is tradition and innovation. The menu boasts homemade and traditional options - the wine list is not limited to Italian varieties, though the beer is. We stopped in briefly and relaxed with a glass of wine in their quiet back garden and spoke with one of the restaurant's partners as waiters set up for that evening's meal. When we asked him to describe the food that Giano served in a short sentence he told us humbly: "Italian food. No big deal. " Can't wait to try it!
Most business owners know how difficult it is to bounce back after being robbed. Makoto Wantanabe has done it twice and, ironically, has a thief to thank for the very birth of Tokio 7. Makoto was globetrotting in the early 1990s when he arrived in Southern California on what was supposed to be the penultimate stop on his tour. He befriended a homeless man and let him stay in his hotel room for the night, but Makoto awoke to find everything except for his passport was stolen. Stranded with no money and far from his home in the Japanese countryside, Makoto called one of his only contacts in the U. S., who worked at a Japanese restaurant in Manhattan. He scrounged up enough money for a bus ticket and was off. While in New York, Makoto felt that men’s clothing suffered from a lack of style. Having always had a knack for fashion, he knew he could change that but lacked the funds to open a store with brand new clothing. So, after several years of saving his wages as a waiter, he founded one of the first consignment shops in New York City. Tokio 7 now carries men’s and women’s clothes, with the overarching theme being, as Makoto says, that they are simply “cool. ” The clothes are mostly from Japanese designers and name brands with unique twists. In the store, clothing that has been donated with a lot of wear is labeled “well loved. ”Despite its importance in the community, the shop fell on tough times during the COVID-19 pandemic. To make matters worse, Tokio 7 was looted in the summer of 2020 and had 300 items stolen. When Makoto contemplated closing his doors permanently, longtime customers begged him to reconsider. Resilient as ever, he set up a small photography area in the back of the shop and sold a portion of his clothes online to compensate for the decline of in-person purchases. Reflecting on his journey, Makoto marveled at the whims of fate. Had he not been robbed all of those decades ago in California, he had planned to start a life in the Amazon rainforest
This small, old-world neighborhood barbershop is loaded with personality. Everything about Barbiere is unique: the whimsical wrought-iron gate out front, the retro hair and shaving products along the walls, and the high-quality, old-fashioned service. When we poked our heads in to chat with the barbers and their clients—all seated in vintage leather chairs—they were proud to tell us that James Franco is among the celebrities that drop by for a haircut or a classic shave.
