Sarah Silverman started baking while going through what she calls “a bit of a heartbreak.” Two years later, those therapeutic hours in the kitchen churned out the Cupcake Market, a venture she opened with her mother, Dahlia, in April 2016. While the original plan was to have a store that featured home décor exclusively, Sarah wanted something a little different - cue the cupcakes. One side of the shop encapsulates the sweet baked goods, while the other side doubles as an English tearoom and a display room for the new and vintage décor being sold.
Less than two months after its opening, the market was already wildly popular. The success was due in part to cookies that artfully depicted candidates for the upcoming presidential election. Seeing these tasty and intriguing treats, @hungrybetches, a food Instragrammer with a large following, posted “Just took a bite out of Trump’s head,” bringing the Cupcake Market (and the political cookie) instant Instagram fame. A chalkboard in Cupcake Market even kept tally of how many Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders cookies were sold as part of the store’s very own “cookie primary.” Since, Sarah has continued to craft cookies of culturally relevant celebrities like Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.
What I found most touching is that Sarah cannot express enough gratitude to the friends and community that have helped her along the way. “That's my best friend, that's my best friend, that's my best friend," Sarah smiled, pointing to each person that was working behind the counter. Of East 7th Street she said, “I call this the magical block... they are the friendliest people I have ever met in my life.” She found the location by chance one day as she was walking by at the same moment that the owner of a tattoo parlor who had just ended his lease was handing the key to the broker. “It was meant to be,” Sarah said.
