Sushi Yasuda
Lunch M-F 12pm-2pm; Dinner M-Sa 6pm-10pm
Considered by many to be one of the top sushi restaurants in Manhattan, I was intrigued to learn more about Yasuda. When I asked a friend who lived in the area, about the restaurant, she explained to me that this is where she goes for a “clean, fresh, authentic Japanese sushi/sashimi experience.” They are purists at Yasuda, clearly discerning as to the quality and integrity of the fish that they select and the simplicity and care with which they prepare and serve it. She went on to say, “Put simply, they allow the flavors of each fish to speak for itself – and each bite does, in fact, transport the diner to the sea.”
It is no wonder that they have gained such a loyal following as the chefs have been schooled by Naomichi Yasuda, one of the traditional grand sushi masters. He worked behind the counter at Yasuda for twelve years, meticulously training others, until he felt it was the right time for him to move back to Japan. The food continues to take center stage in a quiet, unembellished setting with a few tables, and the sushi bar, where the magic unfolds.
An interesting note: There is no tipping allowed. The concept is that guests are expected to relax and enjoy their dining experience without having any added concerns besides paying the check that is handed to them at the conclusion of the meal. As is the protocol in Japan, the servers are compensated through their salary and do not rely on gratuities.
