Love Gang was barely open when, in Cara Bloch’s words, “All hell broke loose.” She and her partner, Carmen Ruiz, had placed a David Bowie jacket in the window, and people immediately began stopping in to purchase one. As a result, they sold out quickly, though Cara showed me the Jimi Hendrix version, which was hanging on a mannequin. Their Rolling Stones shirts, from the same line, were purchased equally as fast. Cara is very excited by the neighborhood's enthusiasm for their new venture – the store has no online component, and so the two women are getting all of their business from people walking by and word of mouth.
The two owners come from very different backgrounds. Carmen owned a vintage store, Devorado, in the same location before opening Love Gang. Cara calls Carmen, who is the primary curator for the store, the “creative fire” of Love Gang. Cara, a self-described “vintage fanatic,” used to be a rock photojournalist. She showed us prints of her photos of artists such as Bright Eyes and the Beastie Boys that she keeps near the front of the store for customers to flip through. She was very pleased when visitors, especially young adults, started buying them. She also has decorated the store in her photography, including her photos of rock fans. She decided to take a break from her work, she says, after “being on a plane for 10 years,” and was very happy when Carmen called, inviting her to partner in this latest venture.
Cara continued taking me on a whirlwind tour of the shop, showing me clever t-shirts designed by the company Unfortunate Portrait, classy black bathing suits from Sufi Cohen, and a sunglasses collection. “We feature independent designers with a splash of vintage,” she explained while showing me a rack of bell-bottom trousers and a display of vintage pins. There are also a few fun hints of kitsch, including colorful bags in fun shapes sitting on a high shelf. Everything in Love Gang was innovative and original – most items I saw were completely unlike anything I had seen in other clothing stores, which is impressive in the vibrant East Village neighborhood.
Though just opened when we visited in 2015, Cara was already looking forward to new projects. She told me enthusiastically about how Love Gang was going to work with Kate Neckel of The Creativity Journal. Ultimately, the two women are keeping their eyes peeled for new, unique items to add to their collection. Cara smiled broadly and said, “That’s the joy of it for us – the hunting part.”
